How to Play the G7 Chord
Place your 1st finger on the 1st string of the 1st fret (a lot of 1st’s there!). Your 2nd finger goes on the 5th string of the 2nd fret. And on that 3rd fret you’ll find your 3rd finger on the 6th string.
Strum all 6 strings – you’ll have 3 open strings in the middle ringing out along with your 3 fretted strings.
Here’s how that all looks in a helpful chart for the G7 chord:

Easy Chord Variation
For an easy way to play a G7, try this version of the chord. It takes 3 fingers and 3 strings. You’ll only strum strings 3 through 5.
Place your 1st finger on the 4th string of the 1st fret. You’ll have 2 fingers on the 2nd fret: your 2nd finger goes on the 5th string and your 3rd finger on the 3rd string.
Barre Chord Variation
If you’re feeling more adventurous, reach up to the 10th fret for a barre chord version of the G7. You’ll barre the 1st – 5th strings.
(With all that barring, your 2nd finger gets a rest here.)
On the 12th fret, your 3rd finger goes on the 4th string and your 4th finger goes on the 2nd string.
G7 Chord With D7 Shape
This version uses a D7 shape. Go to the 5th fret and start with your 1st finger on the 4th string. Your 2nd finger goes on the 2nd string of the 6th fret.
On the 7th fret, put your 3rd finger on the 3rd string and your 4th finger on the 1st string.
G7 Chord With E7 Shape
Finally, another barre chord version for you to try. You’ll barre the 3rd fret, top to bottom. Then, place your 2nd finger on the 3rd string of the 4th fret. And put your 3rd finger on the 5th string of the 5th fret.
Try each of these voicing to see how they’re similar and different, and which version you would like to use in your songs.
